A Historical Conversation

The Family Farm School concept started on June 1935, in Sérignac-Péboudou, a small village in Lot-et-Garonne, France, when the young Yves Peyrat, then twelve years old, after receiving his basic education diploma, told his father, John Peyrat:
-"Father, you know I love you and try my best to be an obedient son, but I wish not to go back to school anymore.  I want to be a farmer, like you. That school is not for farmers."
(Translated from a publication written in French, "Le lien des responsables…": the Official Journal of Maisons Familiales Rurales d’Éducation et d’Orientation,  no. 197, June 2007, Paris, France)

John Peyrat shared this concern to his priest-friend, Rev. Fr. Pierre-Joseph Granereau:
-"My son, Yves, do not want to go to college anymore. It will not be good for him because after basic education, he is still not considered educated."
-"There is still hope. There are other schools", said the priest. "Public schools like the school at Marmande, for example."
-"Yes, that one is good to train people for the city, but not to train farmers."
-"There are agricultural schools, there is one in Fažanes, thirty miles away."
-"Yes, how many genuine farmers", continued John Peyrat, "have you seen who graduated from that College of Agriculture? Besides, it is very expensive. It always happens here:  one gets educated and he leaves farming or remain in the land and be ignorant for the rest of his life."
-"There are also the correspondence courses ..."
-"That is just a temporary solution that does not really solve the problem."
-"What if I myself teach him?", volunteerd the priest.
-"He is only going to bore you, the cure would be worse than the disease."
-"What if you find others to join him?"
-"Alright then, I will look for other boys to join him, Father Granereau. My son will be the first in the list."
